Item: PS Audio Directstream  DAC (Melbourne)

Location: Melbourne
Price: $5700 (ono)
Item Condition: Mint (still has plastic wrapping on it).
Reason for selling:  I've gone a bit overboard on hi fi gear recently! So, clawing back some funds for other things.
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
Extra Info:  Less than 1 year old, purchased new from Carlton Audio Visual.  Box and remote included.  Excellent DAC, the most life like I've ever heard.  Field programmable gate array DAC, which plays PCM or DSD.

Given it's volume control and good pre-amp section, it can be plugged directly into power amps with good results, this is how I've had it configured most of the time I've had it.

Some reviews/review comments from the PS Audio website:-

Astounding“, “Gave up vinyl finally“, “Never heard anything like it!” Product of the year in both Stereophile and TAS, Darko Knock Out award, Editor’s choice and Golden Ear awards.

Clap your eyes on these beauties. KOSS K/6, made in Milwaukee - when that still meant nothing. These are in genuine duck-**** brown, which I’m sure is due for a comeback in the high-end headfi world.  According to the labeling, these can even be played stereo, suitable for the modern buyer who has music recorded in that format. Matching serial numbers (I believe). Outstanding condition including the foam. These would suit new buyer who had meant to buy a pair in the 70’s. Comes with original paperwork and warranty card (not sure if it is transferable).

Guaranteed to make most headphones sound ace in an A/B comparison.

Hifi equipment and power boards

$

Today I dropped off my subwoofer for repair. This is the second time in five years that it has refused to power on. The hifi dealer asked me whether I had it plugged into the mains, or into a powerboard. When I said it was in a power board, he said that power amps and subwoofers should always be plugged into the mains, because they may be damaged by voltage spikes.

That got me thinking. One of my power amplifiers (also plugged into a power board) has blown a few valves over the past few years. Perhaps it is suffering from voltage spikes as well.

I am wondering if there is any truth in this? If I get an electrician to pull another cable from the switch, won't it be wired in parallel, same as a power board? Can anyone please explain the difference to this non-electrician?

Also, does anyone know if there is a power spike filter that one can buy to protect equipment? How would you distribute power if you are like me, and have a limited number of mains plugs ... but a large equipment box count ... if you don't use a power board?

Quickflix is dead

I heard on the news today Quickflix has gone into receivership. They blame Stan and 9 network. I feel Netflix had more of a part in it than they say.

I tried Quickflix and found it not good value and cumbersome to use. I guess many others found similar.

What I really didn't like was paying a subscription and having to pay more for anything good or recent release.

Tired ears.

G'day all, a bit of a quiet day in patches so I spent a bit of time listening to various phono stages/cartridges, listening to the same music repeatedly.  Whilst the listening did show up differences, after a few hours of this, I'd had enough....I got a headache and my ears were 'tired'.  Too much of a good thing?   Regards, Felix.

Just got a "Disco-Antistat (made in Germany)" vinyl cleaner - any opinions?

$

0

I just got a wet record cleaner - a Knosti "disco-antistat" that is labeled as being made in Germany. It appears to be a bit similar to the "Spin Clean" (bright yellow) device but instead of scratchy velvet pads it uses camel- or goat-hair brushes. I have read that one should do a second clean in de-ionised water after the cleaner to make sure everything is gone. Anyone else used one? I am waiting to hear the first results from a really noisy copy of Tubular Bells as a test, but nothing is dry yet...

Edit - couldn't find my bottle of de-ionised water so they didn't get that second treatment. Complete drying in a coolish Canberra room took about 10 minutes.

The result - it seems to work perfectly. The previously un-listenable copy of (quadraphonic) Tubular Bells has become silent in terms of scratchy surface noise. No gooey residue on the stylus as some web comments suggested. I have filtered the solution using the supplied device back into its bottle. I will do a few more and report back again, and also try the second water bath, but not tonight.

Marantz PM54 vs Technics SU-Z65

$

Hey guys, i would like some advise on choosing between an marantz pm54 amp with a ST-64 tuner and a Technics Su-z65 and a st-z55 tuner. i have a friend who acquired both sets and wants to use one in a garage and i can have the other, he is not fussed. From what i can read the sets are very similar in specs with the marantz producing 10 more rms watts

Im wanting to use this set to listen to radio and digital audio via a fiio x5 or computer and CD. I already have a marantz 2230b and a kenwood ka 5002 which i swap between using for vinyl. So i would be interested to know which one would be better suited for my purpose. they will be driving a set of 3 way kenwood floor speakers.

I really don't have much experience with audio gear post 1980 so any help would be much appreciated

Item: Klipsch Reference RF-25 Floorstanding Speakers

Location: Altona North 3025
Price: $750 negotiable
Item Condition: Very good - excellent
Reason for selling: Surplus to requirements
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, Internet Banking
Extra Info:

Selling my trusty pair of Klipsch RF25 floorstanders.

Great speakers, especially for HT. They've performed great but I found a pair of MA's to match the rest of my system. This model was replaced by the very popular RF-62 and is virtually identical.

They are in excellent condition with the following exceptions:
1. Scuff on front surface of one speaker
2. Small dint in one bass driver
3. The odd little nick here and there in the vinyl

None of these blemishes have any effect on performance. They have very high sensitivity and therefore are very easy to drive with inexpensive amplification. Happy for inspection/demos.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Pickup from Altona North or I can deliver locally.

Item: Conrad Johnson Premier 12 Tube amplifiers
Location:  Chadstone VIC
Price: $4800
Item Condition: Excellent for age
Reason for selling: Too much amp for me (physically)
Payment Method: Local Pickup Preferred - Cash, Paypal (+3%), COD Only
Extra Info:

I recently purchased this from a fellow SNA forum member.

These amps are simply stunning.  They have a warm enveloping sound, with and expansive soundstage and effortless detailed presentation.  I have owned many amps and the CJ house sound is something that you need to experience to understand just how good tube amplification can be.

These rarely come up for sale and they are still highly sought after overseas.  Landed cost nowadays would be much higher than the asking price.

They simply take up too much space in my home and I think I need to move them on.

Amps are in excellent condition and come with factory packaging and tube cages.

Original FS post can be found here.

WTB: Solid State Phonostage

$

Item: Solid State Phonostage (eg Audia Flight, Aurorasound
Price Range: up to $6k
Item Condition: New or Used

Extra Info: Looking for a solid state phono stage to partner with the Jadis DA50S I just acquired.  I find that with the Manley Chinook, there is too much midrange and loss of high frequency details.  The Chinook sounded fantastic with a solid state amp.   The sound is more balanced when I use the PS Audio Phono.

I am looking at different options including tube rolling the Jadis (KT88s - considering the EAT which I understand gives a more neutral tone)), the Chinook (6922s), interconnects (maybe silver?) and speakers.  This just shows how much one component can affect another.

Prefers something with dual input (MM/MC) and a Mono switch.

If possible, would like to trial the phono stage in my system.
