Pre/Pro power supply temps.

$

Ok, my Marantz 8801 can get a bit on the warm side (mostly in warm weather) so during summer I was feeling the need to turn it off in the afternoon because of this. It's gets hotter than my power amps (due to Amps not working hard)

It gets hot from the underside, which I can feel when I put my hand under the chassis, so I tried to find out what was sitting there inside to be causing these temps considering this is a pre amp and not doing any hard wakka as such.

As it turns out, this is sitting there, the power supply:
image.jpeg

And these are the caps in that power supply
image.jpeg

So I'm guessing the 4 black transistors (?) that are attached the the chassis are what's causing the heat and they are using the copper chassis as a heat sink.

So my question is, are the parts pictured, and I know it's not detailed, good enough parts to be able to withstand high temps for a good while, I'm always paranoid with high temp gear, even though my Yamaha z9 will burn your hand at idle and it's lasted 12 years.

Any thoughts on the matter @Zaphod Beeblebrox

Cheers

I'll he to add, not a bad power supply for a pre, I've seen smaller caps in some amplifiers.

FS: Vienna Acoustics Mozart

Item: Vienna Acoustics Mozart
Location: Richmond, Vic 3121
Price: $1400 (open to insulting offers)
Item Condition: functionally excellent, cosmetically very good. There are some small holes in front grill mesh - not on speaker bodies.
Reason for selling: Magneplanar
Payment Method: COD, Pickup preferred
Extra Info: beautifully open and detailed speakers but they need to go. I've taken up with Maggie and she's a very jealous mistress.
These are the original black gloss timber Mozarts, not the newer very high gloss SE versions. I'm told Wolfie himself preferred the sound and finish of this version.
They aren't that hard to drive but they really do respond well to higher quality amplification.
I have original boxes but would definitely prefer local buyer. The seriously interested are welcome to audition in Richmond.
Sorry for the crummy photos. My camera is in hospital and the light has gone for the day. I will photograph and post the very minor holes in the front mesh tomorrow.

FS: Logitech Squeezebox Touch audio player/streamer

$

Item: Logitech Squeezebox Touch digital music player and streamer

Location: West Footscray, Melbourne

Price: $200 including postage.

Item Condition: Functionally, excellent with no issues. Cosmetically, I would say very good. The rubber coating on remote has deteriorated and has become a bit sticky but the remote works fine. The Touch unit itself has fine scratches and swirl marks on the display too. I have tried to capture that in the picture. This happened when it was packed without the screen guard on and the box rubbed against the screen. Otherwise in fully working condition - no issues at all. Comes with original box and full set of original accessories.

NOTE: I am the original owner and I originally bought it in the UK. So the power adapter has UK style plug pins. I use a universal type power strip so this wasn't an issue. Also, the actual plug is removable type attachment, its not fixed to the power adapter. Not sure if this type of attachment is available or not but possibly the plug attachment can be replaced with Australian type?

Reason for selling: No longer used.

Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal (+3%) Only

Extra Info: Can be picked up from West Footcray VIC

1500 lps from Germany needs to come to Australia.

A good friend of the family has over 1500 lps in plastic outer sleeves and boxed up in wooden wine crates. They have been in storage there for almost 20 years and according to his inspection last year, are all in fantastic condition still. He is visiting Germany again this year with the intention of repacking them for a trip home to Oz. Anyone here experienced in one off packing and transportation of this many lps from Europe? If so, what is the most cost effective way to do it? As I am in export, I have a few good agents to do the transporting, but what method (pelleting, boxing, etc) is best?

Quality USB cables makes a difference

$

I was one of those people who thoughts USB cables do not matter as it only carries data bits (0 or 1).
Well i am pleased to say i was WRONG.
I have tried few cables from the standard ones to more expensive boutique ones.
I had a dramatic improvement with the LH Lightspeed 10g (bought from a SNAer). Dont know how and why but the soundstage, resolution and detail have all gone up. Can keep pushing the volume higher and i am still able to hear all instruments clearly (no loudness noise or distortion).
So i can confirm USB cables must be of a very good quality if you want the best out of your digital system.

Extra Info:
Sought after & bought this late 2009 model about 3 years ago to replace my AppleTV to store & play music files as the late 2009 models were reported on Computeraudiophile to be the best for music replay. Whilst I've had it I've sent music via the USB ports to a PS Audio & Klein DAC with ease, recently with a REGEN USB regenerator with no issues & it sounds very nice!

I've also updated the OS to El Capitan, version 10.11.4. It's Processor is a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB (x2 slots), 1067 MHz DDR3.

It's worked flawlessly since I've had it but with the El Capitan OS it's at the limit of it's computing power, but only when playing files via PureMusic 3 (Apparently the PM3 manual states this for the 4 GB, 2.53 GHz models but I've only had issues when upscaling FLAC & ALAC when playing via the PM3 software, all other software, JRiver, iTunes & Audirvana had no issues). At all other times it works well & handy to have a 2nd computer hooked up to my 50" plasma!

I've watched the youtube video's on how to upgrade the RAM many times but just not got around to do it but if you were to do this, it would ensure it's in good shape to keep playing music & to be used as a 2nd computer for years to come. I will return it to factory settings but will leave some of the music applications on it.

Blunt Talk

$
0
0

New to pay TV in Aus.

If only this was a British production....IMHO it would have been a LOT funnier [ I'll reserve my opinions of USA based production companies trying to do BRIT COM without BRIT writers ...it basically falls flat in most places] .... the timing of the comedic pieces [what few there are] leaves a lot to be desired.

Somewhat of a mish mash of both plot, and identities within the plot.

Here's a IMB rundown of the show.

  • British newscaster Walter Blunt comes to Los Angeles, intent on conquering the world of American cable TV. Through the platform of a nightly interview show, Blunt is on a mission to impart his wisdom and guidance on how Americans should live, think and behave. Unfortunately, Blunt is constantly harassed by interfering network bosses, a dysfunctional news staff, and his numerous ex-wives and children. Blunt must now deal with the fallout from his well-intended but misguided actions, both on and off the air, with only an alcoholic manservant at his side.

  • A British newscaster moves to Los Angeles with his alcoholic manservant and the baggage of several failed marriages to host a sanctimonious talk show.

Maybe it might get better with further episodes [one would hope so with such a excellent cast] but the first few episodes have left me wondering...well hoping really.... as one or two laughs per episode do not a comedy make.
