These speakers essentially got me into 'audio' about a year ago, and I swore I would never sell them.
This speaker has quite a long history, particularly in the US where they sold close to a million of them! They were designed as a low-cost, large bookshelf monitor quality speaker system. They are baffled, with a single 8 inch woofer. They also have a 'famous' inverted dome tweeter.
As part of another 'tragic audio story from the late 1980's', the company went downhill due to cost pressure and the key player (Winslow Burhoe) left and made the 'Genesis' company, based on similar principles. Winslow is also associated with Boston Acoustics and Energy speakers.
I'd really like to see these go to a permanent, good home. Be careful though, you might actually be a bit gobsmacked by how good these can sound.
To quote: "The bottom line, is that the EPI 100 is a fantastic speaker, and a huge bargin. Don't underestimate it's musicality. It's always a pleasure to listen to"
These are the 'generation 2' 100v. There are later, 'Time/energy' version which are quite a bit poorer.
These sound best with a warmish amp. My first audio about a year ago was these speakers with a Sansui AU-3900, and i'm happy to pass this on as well as part of the package for additional $150.
Something unique unusual about these speakers is that you can get new parts for them. An ex-Genesis employee has a small business (www.humanspeakers.com) and makes new/updated terminal, crossovers, drivers and all other components for these, and most other EPI /Genesis speakers. A testament to their legacy.
I got these as part of a 'package' from a church fete, having no idea what i was buying. They spent the first 10 years as the church music system, then in a dark cupboard for the next 20. They are a very transparent speaker.
A key part of their design is that the woofer is designed for natural roll-off, and as such they have, and require no crossover. They do have a 8uF cap to protect the tweeter and benefit from a simply cap replacement to bring them back to 100%.
Not particularly common in Australia, but you can buy any and every single part easily on ebay or new.
