Floor Standers V Stand Mount + Subwoofer

In the past, I've usually run either stand mount speakers plus sub or smaller floorstanders (up to twin 6") plus sub, and been pretty happy. A few days ago I was fortunate to pick up a decent set of floor standers at a good price, which have an 8" bass driver and good bass extension into the 20s. After sorting out a couple of dead tweeters (fortunately I had spares), I am really enjoying the "large speaker" experience. The large speakers just have a sense of scale that I didn't often get with smaller models, even though very capable subs were used.

What preference do others have, smaller speakers + subwoofer, or just a larger more capable (bass wise) set of speakers? I'm really enjoying the larger floorstanders right now, even though the smaller speakers/subs are of high quality and have better low frequency extension.
