Item: ACT, SCM-11 Speakers

Location: Canberra

Price: $1300 (Plus courier if required)

Item Condition: Excellent physical and working condition no marks or scratches - however they are missing speaker grilles and some binding post caps (original owner had lost them when he was bi-wiring)

Reason for selling: Great speaker that's simply overkill for my second system given the amount of use it gets

Payment Method: Pickup or Courier in Original Packaging - Cash, Paypal (add 2.5% for buyer protection)

Extra Info:

Cosmetically and functionally these speakers are in perfect shape - as I mentioned above the original owner lost the grilles and some of the binding post caps. I shall ship them in their original box. I also have the original paperwork from ATC certifying that these speakers meet their quality standards.

About the speakers

Originally the range made absolutely no concessions to budget, with an entry price well over the £1,000 mark, but in recent years a couple of models have cracked that barrier. Indeed, the SCM12 and SCM7 had been around long enough to warrant some updating and, while the latter remains sufficiently close to its original incarnation to keep the model number, the SCM12's internal volume has now shrunk by one litre to become the SCM11.

By making its own drive units, ATC is able to keep particularly tight control on the performance of the overall product. This is reflected in some of the best-measured specs in the business. The downside, if one might call it that, tends to be exceptionally low sensitivity. ATC correctly points out that, these days, Watts are cheap and the speakers are built to handle high power, resulting in a maximum acoustic output that's pretty much par for the course.

Although some refinements - such as ATC's 'Super Linear Technology' distortion-reducing concept - are only applied to upmarket designs, the main driver here is nonetheless innovative in its use of 'Constrained Layer Damping' to reduce resonance within its structure. ATC claims that this both reduces distortion in the critical midband and eases crossover requirements.

The drivers in this two-way are ATC’s own design. The mid-bass unit is unique -- a midrange dome nestled in a cone woofer. As with other ATC’s that use this type of driver, the transparency through the middle is striking for a two-way. One suspects an advantage to not having a single cone handle the entire mid and low frequency spectrum.

My Thoughts
People liken the SCM-11 to the Harbeth P3ESR and Rogers' LS3/5A, some even say they are better, which was why I decided on these. The sealed box design allows for flexible placement, especially in smaller rooms.

The review's say the require decent power at their efficiency level, but in my experience so far I would say the appreciate good power, not lots of power.

I've tried them in a few rooms with the McIntosh MA6100, my dads Rotel RA-1570 integrates and both have which provided more than ample. The 6100 volume at 1/3 of the way is beyond what I consider comfortable in a room that's 4.3 x 2.7m with a 3m ceiling.

In my dad's overly large open planned living room we weren't pumping his rotel any harder than we would to power his bowers and Wilkins CM5's to achieve similar volume. The ATC sounded much better than the CM5's as well.
