I have a Preamp that I picked up and looking inside it has a motorized Alps volume. I think it is more a SS preamp with 2 tubes to add some tube sound.
I bought a nice Stepped antenuator (64 steps) a while ago for another project but it did not happen.
I am now thinking it may be a nice upgrade to my current preamp.
Inside the Pre there is some other circuitry around the volume that may be the delay circuit? 2 relays next to the volume.
Looking at my pics, does anyone think it may be a good idea to pursue changing the volume?
I was going to take it a technician to do the work.
The company behind this preamp also makes a higher end model that has an optional stepped attenuator to purchase with it.
Or I can just be happy with the Alps in my preamp and sell the stepped one I have.
Planning to keep this Preamp for the long haul.
There was one part in the manual that made me think I could be creating a problem attempting to get the volume changed.
" equipped with a proprietary control and monitoring system we call Power Management. This is an "electronic brain" within the amp that regulates and controls all of the amplifier's functions. It includes the Soft Start Electronics that gently ramp up the heating and supply voltages to save wear and tear on the components. In the event of a problem, the Power Management's protection system will disconnect the unit from the power supply. Power Management helps us to achieve a completely consistent sound while at the same time ensuring the total reliability of our products."
