Just how good is the Denon DL 103?

$

Recently, I was in between cartridges for various reasons and in order to make do resurrected my old Denon DL 103. I took a great deal of care to set it up correctly.

I have to say I am really stunned at just how good this cartridge is - no modifications, just the stock standard DL 103. In particular, I am amazed at the tonal richness and mid range beautify of this cartridge. It is just incredibly enjoyable to listen to.

I am waiting for a Zu modified Denon to arrive and can't believe that that will be any better.

Given how good it is, I think I would be reluctant to muck around with mods that might change its tonal beauty like changing cantilever, stylus etc.

Pictures:VTL Deluxe 140 Monoblock Power Amplifiers

Very desirable limited edition mono-blocks operate in both ultra linear @ 140 Watts Rms  per channel and in pure class A triode mode switchable at 70 Watts Per Channel.

Each mono-block has 6 x 807 ultra wide bandwidth transmitting tubes plus 1 x 6350 and 1 x 12at7

Fully adjustable bias current controls with wide range pots fitted to use a wide selection of 807 brands and types.

Both mono-blocks perform flawlessly and are in excellent condition.

I am the original owner since new and have them serviced every 5 years since I bought them and they have always checked out perfect although the capacitors on one were changed some time ago due to aging over time. The other capacitors were checked and were as per spec and have remained so ever since.

I think David Manley actually wound the output transformers when he still owned the VTL and you notice after a few hours of playing, the music starts to get very liquid while retaining their dynamic headroom and all the other traits that David Manley engineered into these great amplifiers. These amps look particularly nice at night when you can see the blue space charge in the 807 tubes!

They come with a spare set of tubes (12 x 807 2 x 6350 2 x 12at7)

They weigh about 35Kg each but there are courier services that can ship nationwide quite reasonably.

I am sad to let them go but must as I am doing extensions to my house and could use the money.

I also have a matching VTL High Definition Line Preamplifier that I purchased along with the mono-blocks and used them as a set.

it is also in excellent condition and has some telefunken 801s triangle tubes in it. Very nice sound signature, especially with the 807’s.

Anyway asking price is $3000

These mono-blocks cost me $8000 15 years ago, so I think that is a pretty good price.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you be interested in these items.1.JPG 2.JPG 3.JPG 4.JPG 5.JPG 6.JPG 7.JPG 8.JPG 9.JPG 10.JPG 11.JPG 12.JPG 13.JPG 14.JPG 15.JPG 16.JPG 17.JPG 18.JPG 19.JPG 20.JPG 21.JPG 22.JPG 23.JPG 24.JPG 25.JPG 26.JPG 27.JPG 28.JPG 29.JPG 30.JPG 31.JPG 32.JPG 33.JPG 34.JPG 35.JPG 36.JPG 37.JPG 38.JPG 39.JPG 40.JPG 41.JPG 42.JPG

I am wondering anyone know where to get a fan replacement for the Harman Kardon AVR660.

It feels like the fan might end of life soon. Any suggestion where to get parts would be great.

Well to complete some loops and create others - we have finally settled in out new home. I have a room to myself to play around with ideas and new stuff, my wife calls it my audio room however the audio qualities of the room are far from HIFI. I managed to ping a couple of amps from [Perth] before we even got off the plane, and some kit finally loops back to its origin

Anyway - here's my "audio room" system.

It includes 2 projects I've been working away when I've had spare time, the Audiophonics cased Pi server, and my lovely new phono amp (Salas Folded Simplistic Jfet)

The Pi serves a LM502-CA dac (modified tube rolled) into a Plinius M8 then Parasound [Perth] A21 into ...................  wait for it ..................  KAJAK's candy apple ML1+'s originally from Perth!!

Also tucked in there is a NAKSA 80 [Perth]

TT is a Project Xpression III with mahogany plinth and OM2 Black MM

Hey guys, just thought I'd share a nice shot of my work in progress in the living room, as I just finished the wall mount today. My favourite thing is that it's freed up space on the cabinet for my TT!!

Hi everyone

Just curious has anyone tried the new CXU Cambridge audio? I have seen very good reviews about this product bust does anyone actually has this item at home?

if I do purchase this product it will be connected to a 7 channel power amp and I was told you can use the CXU as a dedicated pre/processor.

Im after high quality picture & sound/sacd.

is it worth buying? or is it better to get separate units? eg blu ray player/ pre processor

Extra Info: I bought this lovely TT about 12 months ago as a second unit for my living room. It doesn't get used too much as my living room is a suspended floor and I cant wall mount it as I don't have the space.

This is the japanese model and I will supply a high-quality step-down transformer.

http://www.thevintageknob.org/denon-DP-59M.html

Included is the MM AT150MLX Cartridge which has very favorable reviews. Low hours on the cart (I would estimate around 30 hours in total).

This is currently partnered with a Graham Slee Era Gold V moving magnet phono stage (with the upgraded PSU). This is not part of the sale, but I will consider selling the phono amp separately,

Digital rig for Vinylphiles?

$
0
0

Ok, this may be in the wrong forum as I am looking at DACs and digital source but I am especially interested in the views of the vinyl people because they come from a certain perspective.  I am also not interested in the debate on whether vinyl or digital is superior - that is covered to death in other forums.

My system consist of Jadis DA50S integrated tube amp (which I installed Grant Fidelity Treasures KT120, and NOS Telefunken 12AX7s and 12AU7s), Usher Mini-X Dancer bookshelf speakers with a REL subwoofer.  My vinyl rig is a Well tempered Classic with Lyra Delos cart feeding into Aurorasound Vida.  I would describe the sound as detailed, lively, lush and very musical.

After listening to a number of different digital combinations, I have finally settled on Antipodes DX and Calyx Femto DAC being the most satisfying.  The AB with the vinyl rig (using Norah Jones' Come Away with Me and Eva Cassidy Greatest Hits) is surprisingly close, and I had to listen closely to find the difference.  But there are still differences.  The vinyl still excel at the edges, and sound more "raw" than the digital rig. Listening to Eva Cassidy's Fields of Gold, there is a bit more resonance and echo in the vinyl sound giving the impression that she is in the room while the digital has less "echo".  But the difference is very small.  In terms of cost, on estimated retail prices, the digital rig is 1.5x the cost of the vinyl rig.

I will be interested in other vinylphile's view of how they approach their digital gear, whether they look for a particular sound, compare to their vinyl rig or go into an entirely different direction.

Headphone amp for under $200

$

Hey there, now that I have a B&O H6, I want to see whats all the fuss about using a dedicated amp instead of the computer/phones 3.5mm output.

Recommend me something under $200 new or used that is good and can be portable. Even though i will most likely listen to things at home, i would like to have the opportunity to take with me if I go anywhere/travel/etc.

Ive been looking at the Fiio E17k (new $180) and the creative sound blaster e5 for a bit more ($250)

Any other brands/models? I would love a Chord Mojo, but that's wayyyy out of my wanting to spend budget.

Sources will most likely be computer. But would be handy to use phone (iphone and galaxy)
