I had a go at the method outlined in this Greg Borrowman Aust HiFi mag article. More pluses than minuses in the washup.
2.2 setup: 2x REL305 subs, 300W, 18Hz; Naq pre & power - passive & 200W-odd, 50W ClassA; Elac 249BEs, 27-50k Hz.
Using the AudioTools app.
Matched the SPL at 71db, given room ambient level of ~35db. Surprised I had to turn sub volume as high as I did. This was the REL Lo input, from a dedicated pair of sub outs on pre, recommended by REL local distributor, as distinct from the manual recommendation.
Then could not fully nail the Freq range bars, when adjusting the REL freq crossover & the phase. But it was significantly better than when I started. Again, I was surprised how low the crossover was eventually set.
The overriding problem was my inability to move the subs around the room space, for optimum location, as per the Borrowman advice. Pretty much, the 2 corners are it.
The other remaining problem, not really thought through yet, is that the 2nd REL input is the .1/LFE from the Oppo105 & clearly this must effect the SPL levels. But the recommended cd tracks are not surround ones with a .1. I just adjusted the .1/LFE level on the sub by ear.
So, not perfect ... but I did get a real improvement overall, for AV purposes. But, no, the subs aren't good enough to listen to 2 channel music.
