Hi All,
I am about to re-rip my CD collection. My collection is not huge with about 30,000 tracks but I guess big enough it is a time consumng project. Tracks will be saved on my Synology NAS but also need to keep a copy (of some tracks) on my laptop for when I travel for work.
The decision to rerip is because I am in the process of changing from Apple devices to PC so my library is ripped in the apple formats.
My iTunes library in a combination of low quality (done back when I knew no different) and Apple Lossless formats. I would say the Apple lossless would be about 25-30% of the total.
A percentage (maybe 10-15%) of the tracks I no longer have the CDs for, however these are largely for learning purposes only (ie. complete Schumann, Wolfe, Brahms lieder by Fischer-D) and I dont really need a super high quality recording. So am likely to just convert them across to a more appropriate file type.
Suggestions are welcome on what file type I should convert to.
Any CDs that I reripideally will be FLAC and I will try and buy DSD for any new purchases.
I am considering using Roon to manage my library but need to make sure I can set it up on my home NAS and also my laptop for when I travel.
So for this little project, I was interested to see how much the CD/DVD drive impacts the ripped recording. Anyone got any experience on trialing different drives ?
I have both a CD and a DVD drive in my PC tower neither of which are anything special, but I was wondering if reripping my collection would justify finding a Plextor 2 Premium 2 or the older Yamaha drive ?
Also is it possible to use my Oppo for this ? Would it be a better option ? I guess I would need a soundcard with an optical input (sound blaster audigy or equiv) for this to work.
Has anyone done this ? What results did you get ?
If the general concensous is no big difference I will just get on with it.
Appreciate any comments.
