Re-capping old equipment

I'm not at all electronically minded and completely ham fisted within a yard of a soldering iron 😀

I've bought some late 70s gear and wondered whether many on here go about re-capping old stuff and what improvement it makes to the sound (without losing its original signature tone)

I have a suspicion such work is expensive too - but I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others
