SQ Increase using a 12v Sbooster PSU on a miniDSP

This afternoon, I had @TomAus, @djb and @ThirdDrawerDown over for a listen to my system, with the new subs.

I took the opportunity of using their ears for a comparison of the relative SQ of 3 different PSUs for my miniDSP 10x10Hd unit (which is supplying a 4-way active XO for my system):

  • first was the standard 12v Meanwell SMPS, supplied with the miniDSP unit.
  • second, I put one of my 'Isotran' units between the Meanwell and the wall-socket.  This incorporates an isolating transformer and a hash filter.
  • thirdly was a 12v Sbooster SMPS.

We listened to the same track (from LC's "Songs from the Road") and went backwards and forwards through the 3 PSUs; there was a unanimous vote that the Sbooster gave the best SQ.  My rating of SQ would be that if the Meanwell by itself was 6 out of 10 ... the Isotran made the SQ 9 out of 10 ... but the Sbooster made it 10 out of 10!  The Isotran made the soundstage wider and gave the system more resolution (so you could hear the backing singers - the Webb sisters - better) ... but the Sbooster did this even more so!  :thumb:

So people who are using miniDSPs ... you might like to try out an Sbooster. :)

Andy
