I know this is probably the tail wagging the dog, but I would like to try an MC cartridge in my new rig, but don't want to expand the equipment list, hence it must suit the phono stage. I am looking to take the sound up a few notches, although I am still very much enjoying it currently but just can't help wondering how much better it could be. Probably looking for a neutral to slightly bright and dynamic sound rather than warm.
I currently have an Ortofon 2M Bronze MM cartridge fixed to an Audiomods Classic arm (modified Rega arm) on a Thorens TD-160B table. The Audiomods arm has an effective mass of 9-11 g. I am not sure what type of compliance it likes (still coming to grips with understanding that)
My amp is a Luxman L507ux with inbuilt MM/MC phono stage. This phono stage has a very good reputation, and sounds fantastic with the MM cartridge, so I am keen to just keep using it rather than adding another box. It's specs are input sensitivity of 0.3 mV and impedance of 100 ohms. This is my first issue, as a lot of cartridges like a higher impedance than 100 ohms to sound close to their best.
The previous owner was using the amp with a Lyra Delos cartridge on what he told me was a not too dissimilar arm to the Audiomods. He absolutely loved the combo, but had to sell most of his gear. Specs for the Lyra Delos are 0.6 mV, impedance of 97-806 ohs, weight of 7.8g and a compliance of 12. Here is my second issue - I can't afford/justify a Lyra Delos.
So, can anyone make suggestions for an MC cartridge that they have used in a similar situation, or think would work very well? Budget is preferably below $700, but am happy to consider second hand from a trustworthy source.
Thanks in advance
