Late last year in another thread, I mentioned l had ordered an Ed Saunders V15VxMR stylus as an upgrade for my Shure M97xE. When it finally arrived sometime in April( !!....long story), I checked it out closely, and was under the impression that the cantilever tip was bent up slightly when looking at it from the side. The small cardboard (!) box it came in had been squashed a bit in transit, and I was worried . I tested it on a very incorrectly graded recent purchase that I didn't care about, and it actually sounded quite stunning! I couldn't believe it. Then out came one of my favourite 'sound test' records, and well, I then thought it sounded quite horrible
. Very confused, I dejectedly boxed it and forgot about it. Last night I went to my brothers, and we checked it out with his 60X magnifier. Turns out the cantilever is fine and the diamond tip is near perpendicular to the cart (allowing for 'settling' on record), and all appeared to be normal. When I got home, I set it up and spun Supertramp's "Brother Where You Bound", a brilliant recording/production. At first I thought "wow, really bright.....like REALLY bright', and at times the highs sounded, to me, almost distorted (sibilance?), but then I realised that it's just got a different, very bright sound signature (and maybe a little sibilance
), and that I just had to get used to it. It's just that it's by far the brightest cart/stylus combo I have, compared to my other more 'vintage/warm' sounding carts (Grace F8C, F8L and Denon DL103 and even the Shure with original N97xE stylus), and basically my ears just had to adjust, because on listening further, it sounded really quite good. Retrieving information with aplomb and presenting it with full bodied 'tight as a drum' bass, pronounced mid's, and of course, the bright highs. Further sound tests will reveal more, plus some set up tweaking, but for now, I'm 'guardedly' happy with it. I have since realised that the LP that originally sounded horrible was 'Inside Story' Grace Jones, a very brightly recorded album and my ears just weren't ready for or expecting, that sound. I suspect that while this stylus may turn out to be quite impressive, it won't be my favourite cart/stylus combination.
Has anyone else had experiences with Ed Saunders stylii, and if so, do they 'bed in' and pull back the high frequencies a bit, in time? Because if it does, it may just be my favourite.......maybe.
