I have two reasons for asking this:
1) I would like to know, and
2) I was curious as to whether, as we get older and get to listen to more components, the chances of being really amazed start to decline?
I remember, when I was a newbie (only 30 odd years ago), with my Sansui T/T, Creek amp and AR loudspeakers, going to visit a friend who made amplifiers for a living, and have him play me his Oracle Delphi through his own amps and electrostatic speakers - maybe Quads. I was pretty knocked over. And his AM tuner which was such high quality it sounded better than all of the FM tuners I had heard. I think the stuff even smelled good, I was in such sensory overload.
I may be old and jaded but I'm not sure it is possible to have a moment like that again - maybe my system is now hi-fi enough that the steps are no longer as great.
Here's hoping the Melbourne Hi-fi show will bring up some outrageous horn-loaded speakers playing from some amp powered by a miniature nuclear reactor, with the source provided by a turntable whose cartridge needle is made from the end of a unicorn horn, and after listening, I will be completely knocked over again.
