There is no need to talk too much about the YAMAHA B-2 VFET power amp, while you might not know much about the upgraded version, the last VFET unit out of YAMAHA, the ultimate B-3.
Here is a bit of comments from TVK, "Last of the Yamaha V-FETs, the B-3 makes the separation between the rare and the common V-FET components...Sound-wise, of the three Yamaha V-Fet power amplifiers made, this is the best one, adding tonal finesse and delicacy to the strong previous cocktails. Once you have one (or two), there is no need for anything else ever again, no matter the vintage (or absence thereof) : pure musical bliss, like a TA-N7B."
My personal observation is that, design wise and built wise, the B-3 is a big step forward from the B-2, although you might miss the big VU meters, however, the performance improvement alone is far more than enough to make that up, and I haven't even mentioned the BTL capability that turns each amp into a 140W (as usual from YAMAHA, Very conservative rating!) mono block. And by that, indeed, as Axel said above, there is no need for anything else ever again...and here is the ultra rare chance that you can get hold of one.

Cosmetic condition:
This unit of B-3 is in overall excellent condition. There is no real blemish any where on the unit, apart from a few very small marks here and there but they are really small and you cannot normally see them, unless you study closely. The are a few slightly lighter color spots on the sides and back panel of the Unit 1 but again, very minor, and none on the front. All original, including original VFETs (improved version from the B-2 VFETs), volume knobs and speaker terminals.
Electronic condition:
The unit for sale is in excellent operation condition. It has been checked and maintained. All pots and switches were cleaned. Critical power rail voltage re-aligned. Bias and DC balance re-aligned. The speaker protection relays were cleaned to ensure faithful contact for musical signal to pass through. The craftsmanship and parts quality of the B-3 is among the best I've ever seen. There are quite some parts including matched-pair transistors and large film capacitors which are custom made for this unit to the highest standard. All the indicator lights, switches, pots work properly.
I do have another unit and they are identical so they do match each other very well in a BTL mode for horizontal or vertical bi-amping arrangement.
Performance wise, they are almost completely dark on the background. Very clean and clear sound with huge dynamic power and vast sound stage. High frequency is clean and crisp with wonderful decay character but never fatiguing. Mid is authoritative and never shy, with the right balance of warmness and speed. The low is phenomenal, huge and deep but never loose the tightness and cleanness. Sound stage and imaging are the among the best you can think of. I have been testing them for hours and hours and they run very stable and consistent.
Both units are 100VAC, 50/60Hz version therefore it requires a 240V to 100V stepdown transformer to work in Australia. As long as the transformer is of suitable capacity (500W+, each B-3 takes 190W) and good quality, it will make no difference to the performance of the amp.
