The Lowther range of point source drivers have been around for more than 70 years and for good reason, they are possibly the best of the single driver concept, for reasonable money. Yes, there is Feastrex and others that are arguably slightly better, but the cost of them more than doubles or triples. The DX-3 is one of the better Lowther units with a very strong Rare Earth magnet. As you go up the Lowther range, what you pay for is models with stronger magnets. The stronger magnet result in an increase in the speed of the reaction time of cone movement meaning more detail, coherence and feathery extended treble. The signature of the Lowther DX-3 is that of a fast and airy sound, they express well and seem 'connected to the music' without boxiness or slowness. It is an addictive sound. They are very time coherent in terms of imaging, maintain excellent phase character and have a knack of placing instruments and voices in the correct position within the sound stage. Point source drivers are a lesson for the messed up imaging that occurs in mostall of our box loudspeakers.

I like to use the Lowthers in a 25L bass reflex box which is good down to about 60-80 Hz and supplemented with a favourite fast subwoofer. This makes them truly fullrange (as opposed to claiming to be one, when used on their own). I also like to employ the Baffle Step Compensation circuit designed by Martin J King (Google it). The BSC, depending on the value of the resistor used in the circuit will shelve 3-18 dB in the region (4-10 kHz) where all single drivers generally have peaks. I install a switch so that the BSC can be switched in or out depending on whether you want the Lowther to be directly driven or not ...so you see, you can have your cake and eat it!

My Lowther DX-3 for sale are the later model with the 'rolled edge' on the whizzer cone. This newer design better controls unwanted upper frequencies.
