Fixing a CD player

I just bought an old second hand Pioneer CD player and on arrival (it was shipped interstate) it won't play. It powers up fine, lights up but when you put a disc in and press play it goes back to all zeros in the display. Won't play at all

I've left it two days to settle but still the same.

Any ideas what it is likely to be? Anything I can try as a DIY fix? It isn't worth paying an electronics specialist to do any work
