Open baffle question...

Hey all!

Just going to set up my first attempt at an open baffle system and thought I'd ask a couple of questions. Am planning to run some full range drivers above an H-frame woofer.

I've already got some 18mm MDF cut to make some H-frames for a pair of AE Dipole 18s, which I'm going to run with a Crown XLS2000 which has a LPF setting. Don't think it has any other DSP functions, but the Dipole 18 is apparently designed to work well in open baffle without any eq.

For the full ranger I was thinking about buying a Markaudio Alpair 10p or 12p and placing it on a baffle above the H-frame. I'm planning to initially run it from a Tripath amp or Firstwatt F3 clone I've got lying around, but a 300b tube amp is in the works.

The frequency response graph for the 12p looks good, and is flatter than the 10p I think, but from many online opinions the 10p sounds a bit subjectively brighter and clearer on the top end, so I think I'll go for the 10p (even though it's less sensitive / efficient).

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about whether it's safe to run the full ranger without a crossover, or if I can put a cap on the driver to act as a simple high pass. I could use another Crown XLS2000 with the HPF or get a DCX2496, but was hoping to avoid an electronic crossover on the main driver. Also, what crossover point would people suggest? 300-400hz?

Thanks for any input!
Taz.
