Fostex TH500RP

I am very new to the headfi. For some time I have wanted to try some good "cans" as you put it. Well very recently I decided I'd try some Fostex gear. These headphones are the planar magnetic type driver. Fostex describe this as Regular Phase? I've been "burning them and the amp in ;) " over the last few weeks...

The cups are made of aluminium and these headphones are very nicely made.

Not owning "good" cans in the past I was surprised at how big they appeared on my head. And they initially seemed heavy (suppose anything other than earbuds will!). But I soon have got used to them, and they are very comfortable, head-ear grip just right. I can wear these for long periods without any issues.

I am driving these with a Fostex HP-A8C amplifier. I figured I'd play it safe first and start to experiment with other amps later on.

To me these sound just wonderful. they are very neutral, with a silky midrange and good bass. Its a really nice balanced and open sound, and the detail, well of course in my experience I have never heard such detail before from headphones. For my predominant music taste, these are really nice for jazz and acoustic and vocals. At first I was thinking -- hang on where is the bass, but it is there, its just that its right. I have not really turned the amp up much to high volume.

Think I've opened a can of worms, I'm going down the rabbit hole into the dark and dreamy world of headfi.

Very nice..
